SIZES

Baby - Adult 2XL

  • Custom Fit: Simply enter the intended wearer's head circumference (or choose from the size standards chart) and ANY stitch and row gauge into the generator to get started. You will be prompted later to enter your actual live gauge measured straight from the hat crown. The pattern instructions will then mathematically adjust to fit you perfectly.

  • Standard Sizing (Perfect for Gifts!): Making this for someone else and can't measure their head? No problem. Choose a size from (Child through Adult 2XL), from the Size Standards Chart, plug those numbers in, and click "GENERATE PATTERN"

NEEDLES & HOOKS

16" (40cm) circulars (in size for your gauge) and DPNs or your preferred small-circumference needles (like magic loop) of the same size for the crown portion. You will also need circular needles or a crochet hook 1mm larger than your main needles, depending on your preferred fold-and-join method.

YARN

Weight: Fingering (1), Sport (2), DK (3), or Worsted (4).

Amount: Your exact yardage is automatically calculated based on your custom size and gauge. Simply enter your measurements into the pattern generator to reveal your custom yarn requirements. Planning your yarn purchase? Use the Sample Details listed below as a baseline, or plug estimated numbers into the generator for a quick yardage forecast before you shop.

NOTES
  • Choose Your Size: If you are making for yourself or have access to the recipient, measure their exact head circumference and type that number into the generator for a bespoke fit. If you are knitting a gift and can't measure the recipient, simply type in the circumference for their age group found in the Head Size Standards chart.

  • Your Custom Gauge: Gauge will be measured from the crown stitches, meaning you can start knitting straight away. Just remember to update your actual crown swatch numbers when prompted in the pattern.

SPECIALTY TECHNIQUES

Crochet Chain Bind-Off & Join

Choose this if you want maximum elasticity and a decorative braided chain visible along the outside of the hat.

Using a crochet hook 1mm larger than your main knitting needles:

  1. With the right side facing you, insert the crochet hook into the marked stitch of your lifeline, and then knitwise into the first live stitch on your needle. Slide that stitch off the knitting needle.

  2. Yarn over (yo) and pull the yarn through the live stitch and the lifeline stitch, bringing the loop all the way through to the front (right side) of the hat. You now have 1 loop on your hook.

  3. Insert your hook into the next lifeline stitch, and then knitwise into the next live stitch on your needle. Slide it off the knitting needle.

  4. Yarn over (yo) and pull the yarn through the live stitch, the lifeline stitch, AND the loop currently on your hook, again bringing the final loop all the way through to the front (right side) of the hat.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all stitches are bound off and joined into the lifeline round. Fasten off and pull the scrap-yarn lifeline out.

Disappearing Loop Cast-On

  1. Set Up: Use double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for casting on.

  2. Create a Loop: Form a 1” loop with the yarn, crossing the ball end over the tail. Pinch the cross point to secure it, keeping the ball end on the right and the tail on the left.

  3. Form Stitches (Two Motions):
Hold the needle in your right hand. Insert the needle tip into the loop from front to back using the ball end, wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the needle tip, and pull it back through the loop.
Wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the needle tip again (as a yarn over), then pass the first loop over the second loop and drop it off the needle with your fingers or another needle. One stitch has now been created.

  4. Repeat: Continue these motions until you have the required number of stitches for your project.

  5. Distribute Stitches: Divide the stitches evenly onto multiple double-pointed needles or set them up on a long circular needle for the Magic Loop method. Begin working in the round as instructed by your pattern.

  6. Tighten the Loop: After completing a few rounds, gently pull the tail to close the initial loop.

I-Cord Belly Button Cast-On

Create the I-Cord:

  1. Using your waste yarn, cast on stitches (depending on your pattern’s requirements) to begin knitting an I-cord.

  2. Knit all stitches across the row.

  3. Do not turn your work like a standard project. Instead, slide the stitches to the other end of your needle.

  4. Knit all stitches across the row again.

  5. Continue this process until the I-cord reaches a few inches long.

Attach Your Project Yarn:

  1. With the I-cord complete, introduce your project yarn. Continue knitting, picking up stitches from the I-cord as directed by your pattern. This allows the waste yarn to act as a secure placeholder (see the video above).

  2. Begin Your Project: Work your pattern as usual. The I-cord will stay in place until you’re ready to remove it.

  3. Remove the Belly Button: When your project is complete, gently unravel the I-cord waste yarn. This will reveal live stitches or a clean edge, depending on your needs. Use these stitches to bind off, graft, or continue knitting.

Knitted Bind-Off & Join

Use a knitting needle 2 to 3 sizes larger than your main needle in your right hand:

1. Use your left needle to pick up one stitch off the scrap-yarn lifeline.

2. Knit that lifeline stitch together with the first live stitch on your left needle using your larger right needle.

3. Repeat this for the next stitch.

4. Bind off normally by passing the first stitch over the second. Continue this around the entire hat. Once finished, pull the life line out.

SCHEMATIC
SIZE STANDARDS CHART

💡 No swatch yet? No stress. Just use the sample's gauge (6.75 stitches and 11 rows) for now to get a realistic yardage estimate and generate your pattern. Because this hat is worked top-down, you can start immediately without a swatch! The pattern will prompt you to measure your live stitches later to guarantee a perfect fit.

## ⚠️ FIT CHECK (CRITICAL)

^^⚠️ MEASURE YOUR LIVE GAUGE NOW: It is time to lock in your custom fit! Lay your small crown flat. Using a ruler, carefully count exactly how many stitches and how many rows fit inside exactly 1" (2.5cm) of your knitted fabric. Be as accurate as possible and enter fractions of stitches if required (e.g., 4.7 sts). Do not round up or down!

Scroll up and enter your actual 1" (2.5 cm) Stitch and 1" (2.5 cm) Row gauge counts into the input boxes, and then click GENERATE PATTERN to populate your final accurate instructions.

##CROWN SHAPING

Now that your true live gauge is locked in:

Target Final Crown Stitch Count: {FINAL_STITCH_COUNT} sts total ({STITCHES_PER_SECTION} sts per section).

Continue repeating Rnd 5 and Rnd 6: Until you reach exactly {FINAL_STITCH_COUNT} sts on your needles. Once you hit that number, your crown increases are finished!

^Place a locking stitch marker directly onto the knitted fabric of this final increase round. This marks the end of your crown shaping and makes counting your body rounds much easier.

## BODY & BRIM

### Knitting the Tube

Knit plain (Stockinette) until your hat measures {BODY_LENGTH}{UNIT} from the crown center.

^If you are using the Interchangeable Needle Method described below, stop when you are one round short of 7” so that your lifeline round brings you to exactly the right length.

### 🛑 STOP AND PLACE A LIFELINE

Before you knit any further, insert a lifeline through the live stitches to help anchor your folded brim later. You can do this in one of two ways:

Option 1: Interchangeable Needle Method

Many interchangeable sets (such as ChiaoGoo, Knit Picks, or Lykke) have a small hole in the metal join of the cable. Thread a piece of smooth scrap yarn through this hole and tie a knot at the end to prevent it from slipping out (Ensure your scrap yarn is at least 10” longer than the circumference of your hat and tied at the needle to keep it secure until the round is complete). As you knit the next round, the lifeline will automatically be threaded through the stitches.

Option 2: Tapestry Needle Method

Thread a tapestry needle with smooth scrap yarn in a contrasting color and manually run it through the center of all live stitches currently on your needle.

^Place a marker on the very first stitch of this round. This marks the first lifeline stitch you will join into during your Bind-Off later.

###FOLDED BRIM

^💡 You are about to knit an exact number of rows. To save your sanity, clip a removable stitch marker (or a safety pin) directly into the fabric of your first stitch every 10 rounds. This stops you from having to constantly recount from zero!

Option 1: The Rounded Fold

If you want a traditional, thick, seamless fold:

  1. Knit {TOTAL_BRIM_ROWS} rounds in Stockinette.

  2. Move on to the next section (FOLD & JOIN).

Option 2: The Crisp Fold (Structured & Neat)

If you want a sharp, defined edge at the bottom of your hat:

  1. Knit {BRIM_ROWS} rounds in Stockinette.

  2. Purl exactly 1 round. (This creates a built-in crease for the fold).

  3. Knit another {BRIM_ROWS} rounds in Stockinette.

  4. Move on to the next section (FOLD & JOIN).

## FOLD & JOIN

Fold the bottom edge up inside the hat so your live stitches meet your lifeline (wrong sides/purl bumps are touching).

Option 1: Knitted Bind-Off & Join

^ 💡THE STRETCH SECRET: Do not skip using the larger needle in your right hand! Joining two layers of fabric can easily make a bind-off too tight. The larger needle automatically forces your bind-off to be loose, flat, and stretchy so it fits comfortably over your head.

Option 2: Crochet Chain Bind-Off & Join

Choose this if you want maximum elasticity and a decorative braided chain visible along the outside of the hat.

Using a crochet hook 1-1.5mm larger than your main knitting needles:

^ 💡THE STRETCH SECRET: Do not skip using the larger crochet hook. Also be mindful of your tension, you do not want the tension too tight for the join.
