How to Use the Head Size Chart
-
Head Circumference: Place a tape measure around the widest part of the head, keeping the tape level and snug against the forehead.
-
Hat Height: This measurement provides a guide for standard beanie-style hats. To customize your fit, measure from the crown’s peak (the top center of the head) down to your desired length (usually eyebrow level).
-
Hood Depth: To ensure the hood covers the head from back to front, measure from the furthest point at the back of the head straight forward to the forehead.
-
Hood Height: This is the vertical measurement from the crown’s peak down to the base of the neck or collarbone. Use this to determine the full length of the hood.
A Note on Fit
This chart shows average anatomical head sizes.
-
For Hats: To ensure a snug fit, beanies are typically made with negative ease (the finished hat is smaller than the head). Aim for 10-20% smaller than the circumference listed.
-
For Hoods: Unlike hats, hoods are usually made with positive ease (the finished hood is larger than the head) to allow for movement and comfort. Always check your pattern's specific ease and your gauge before starting.
