To help you confidently choose the right project for your current skill level, every Poppy Shop Smart Patterns™ is rated on a 5-point scale. Whether you are holding needles or a hook, here is what you can expect from each level:
◆ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇
Level 1: Absolute Beginner You know the true basics. You can cast on or chain, work foundational stitches (like knit/purl or single/double crochet), and bind off. These patterns are designed to be relaxing, straightforward, and use minimal shaping. Perfect for your very first project or mindful, TV-watching making.
◆ ◆ ◇ ◇ ◇
Level 2: Confident Beginner You are comfortable with the basics and ready to step it up slightly. These patterns introduce working in the round, simple increases and decreases, and basic finishing techniques. (The Poppy Smart Beanie lives here!)
◆ ◆ ◆ ◇ ◇
Level 3: Intermediate You can read your fabric and fix simple mistakes. These patterns introduce more engaging techniques like short rows, picking up stitches, intermediate textures (like basic cables or post-stitches), and simple colorwork. They require a bit more focus but are highly rewarding.
◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◇
Level 4: Advanced Intermediate You are an adventurous maker who isn't afraid of a challenge. These patterns feature complex garment construction, intricate lace or brioche, and reading detailed charts. You should be comfortable managing multiple techniques at the same time.
◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆
Level 5: Advanced Maker You have mastered the mechanics of the craft. These patterns are highly technical, detail-oriented, and may involve advanced tailoring, complex multi-color designs, or steeking.
Every maker learns at their own pace. If you fall in love with a pattern that is one level above your current comfort zone, I encourage you to go for it! The Poppy Shop tutorial library is always here to help you master new techniques along the way.
