NOTES
  • Choose Your Size: If you are making for yourself or have access to the recipient, measure their exact head circumference and type that number into the generator for a bespoke fit. If you are knitting a gift and can't measure them, simply type in the circumference for their age group found in the Head Size Standards chart.

  • Your Custom Gauge: Remember to wash and block your swatch before measuring! Unblocked numbers will result in incorrect yardage and a poor fit.

  • Written in standard US crochet terminology.

  • If the number comes before the abbreviation, for example: 2hdc, this means stitch the given number into the same stitch (to create an increase). If the number is given after the abbreviation, for example: hdc2, this means to stitch the given number over subsequent stitches.

  • If there is no number after an abbreviation (e.g., hdc, ch, sk), the instruction should be completed once.

How to Swatch:

Because this is a custom-fit pattern, your gauge dictates the entire math of the hat. You must swatch in the Lucent Texture pattern, as the crossed stitches will pull the fabric tighter than standard stitches.

Ch 30 (or any multiple of 6). To mimic the "joined and turned" construction of the hat without making a full circular tube, work your swatch flat while strictly following the RS and WS directions below.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2, [ftrx, btrx] across, turn.

Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Rnd 3 (RS): Ch 2, [btrx, ftrx] across, turn.

Rnd 4 (WS): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Repeat Rnds 1-4 until your swatch is at least 6" (15cm) square. Block your swatch exactly as you will treat your finished beanie before measuring the inner 4" (10cm) to find your stitch and row gauge.

## JAYG RIBBING

Hook: Use a hook 1mm smaller than your main gauge hook.

The ribbing is worked perpendicular to the last row of the body.

Foundation (RS): With the right side facing, ch {RIBBING_CH}.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (working into the spiny bumps of the chain). To join to the body: Slst into the next 2 sts of the body edge. Turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

^Slst's not counted in final st count here and for the entire ribbing section.

Row 2 (WS): Skip the 2 slsts. scblo in each st across, turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

Row 3 (RS): Ch1, scblo across. To join to the body: Slst into the next 2 sts of the body edge. Turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

Next Rows: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 all the way around the circumference of the hat. On the last row, fasten off leaving a long tail approximately {TAIL_LENGTH} for seaming.

## FINISHING

### Seam (mattress stitch)

Anchor the Gap: Thread Your yarn tail onto a tapestry needle Needle. Insert your needle into the very first unworked chain loop of the foundation edge and pull through. This bridges the two sides together.

The Zig-Zag (Lacing):

  • Move back to the final row. Insert your needle under the back loop of the next stitch.

  • Move across to the foundation edge. Insert the needle under the corresponding loops of the foundation chain.

  • Continue lacing back and forth, always working through the 5 stitches and their matching chains.

Cinch to Secure: Every 3 or 4 stitches, gently pull the yarn tail in the direction of the seam. The two edges will pull flush against each other, hiding the join inside the scblo texture.

### Weave in Ends

Once you reach the top of the ribbing, secure the yarn on the wrong side by weaving in your ends.

Weave in all other loose yarn ends.
