Hook Size (in size for your gauge) and a hook 1.5mm smaller for the ribbing sections.

YARN

Weight: DK (3), or Worsted (4). Sample used Worsted (4).

Amount: Your exact yardage is automatically calculated based on your custom size and gauge. Simply enter your measurements into the pattern generator to reveal your custom yarn requirements. Planning your yarn purchase? Use the Sample Details listed below as a baseline, or plug estimated numbers into the generator for a quick yardage forecast before you shop.

GAUGE

Target Fabric Feel: Standard

Aim for a standard, comfortable fabric—not too stiff, not too loose. Use the hook size recommended on your yarn's label.

Note: Because the modified single crochet (msc) is a naturally dense stitch, if your fabric feels too stiff, don't be afraid to go up a hook size. The yarn fiber type your choose will also have a major impact.

PRO TIP: Use your crown as your swatch. Because this balaclava is worked top-down, you don't need to make a separate flat gauge swatch. Crocheting in the round often yields a different tension than crocheting flat.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Unlock the Pattern: Enter your custom sizing measurements and the sample stitch and row gauge (or your best estimate based on your yarn) into the generator to unlock the initial instructions.

  2. Crochet the Swatch: Follow the generated instructions and keep crocheting the Hat Crown until your flat circle measures at least 4.5 to 5 inches across the center. (Don't worry about what round you end on!)

  3. Measure Stitches: Place your measuring tape across a row of stitches near the outer edge of your circle. Count how many stitches fit within a 2” (5cm) span, then multiply that number by 2 to get your 4" (10cm) stitch gauge.

  4. Measure Rows: Don't let the spiral trick your eyes! Because the center of the crown uses taller puff (or hdc) stitches, do not measure from the absolute center. Instead, place the 0-mark of your ruler just outside Round 2 (where your main stitch begins) and point it straight out to the edge. Count the concentric "rings" (each round) that cross directly under the edge of your ruler within a 2” (5cm) span. Multiply that number by 2 to get your 4-inch row gauge.

  5. Update the Generator: Type your calculated stitch and row counts into the generator and click Generate Pattern again. The math will instantly recalculate the rest of the hat to fit your exact tension!

NOTIONS
  • Scissors

  • Stitch markers

  • Measuring tape

  • Tapestry needle.

NOTES
  • Choose Your Size: If you are making for yourself or have access to the recipient, measure their exact head circumference and type that number into the generator for a bespoke fit. If you are knitting a gift and can't measure them, simply type in the circumference for their age group found in the Head Size Standards chart.

  • Your Custom Gauge: Remember to wash and block your swatch before measuring. Unblocked numbers may result in incorrect yardage and a poor fit.

  • Written in standard US crochet terminology.

  • If the number comes before the abbreviation, for example: 2hdc, this means stitch the given number into the same stitch (to create an increase). If the number is given after the abbreviation, for example: hdc 2, this means to stitch the given number over subsequent stitches.

  • If there is no number after an abbreviation (e.g., hdc, ch, sk), the instruction should be completed once.

  • Slip stitch to join rounds. Use the invisible slip stitch method for a less noticeable seam.

Rnd {BODY_RND_2} (RS): Ch1, msc around, join. ({BODY_STS} sts)

Rnds {BODY_RND_3} - {BODY_END_RND}: Repeat Rnd {BODY_RND_2}.

## EYE OPENING

Rnd {EYE_RND_1} (RS): Ch1, msc {SIDE_STS_1}, ch {EYE_CHAINS} (keep the chains loose), sk {EYE_CHAINS} sts, msc {SIDE_STS_2}, join. ({BODY_STS} sts)

^ Keep the following round of modified single crochet stitches a little bit tighter.

Rnd {FINAL_BODY_RND} (RS): Ch1, msc around, join. ({BODY_STS} sts)

Fasten off if you are changing yarn colours for the ribbing.

## FACE COVER JAYG RIBBING (JOIN AS YOU GO)

^ If doing a balaclava in two different colours, switch to the secondary colour here.

With a hook 1.5mm smaller than your main gauge hook.

Row 1 (WS): With the wrong side facing you, join yarn. Ch{RIBBING_CH}, insert hk into 2nd ch from hk and sc {RIBBING_STS} (working into the spiny bumps of the chain). [slst 1 into the right leg of the stitch on Rnd {FINAL_BODY_RND}] twice, turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

Row 2 (RS): Ch1, skip slst's, scblo {RIBBING_STS_MINUS_1}, sc 1 in the last st, turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

Row 3 (WS): Ch1, scblo {RIBBING_STS}, slst 1 into same st as previous join on Rnd {FINAL_BODY_RND}. [slst 1 in right leg of next stitch on Rnd {FINAL_BODY_RND}] twice, turn. ({RIBBING_STS} sts)

^ Keep the Ch1 loose throughout ribbing for flexibility when folded.

Rows 4 - {BODY_STS_MINUS_1}: Repeat Rows 2 - 3, until all of the stitches of the last row of the hat have been slip stitched into.

Row {BODY_STS}: Repeat Row 2, once.

## BOTTOM EDGING

(RS): Flip the balaclava right side out and rotate it so you can stitch into the unworked edge. Ch1, sc across, working one sc into each row of ribbing. ({BODY_STS} sts)

Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to seam the ribbing together.

Thread the long tail with a tapestry needle and seam the ribbing together working through the front and back loops of the right side, and only the back loop of the left side.

## FINISHING

### EYE OPENING EDGING

^ If using two different colours, use the contrasting colour here.

(RS): With your main gauge hook, draw up your yarn in the corner of the eye opening. Ch1, slst around (keep the slst's loose), join.

Fasten off and weave in all ends for a polished finish.
