Beyond the "V" | Mastering the Third Loop in Crochet

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Most crocheters know the standard "V" on top of a stitch. But there is a hidden horizontal bar underneath that "V" called the Third Loop (3rd loop).

Using this loop pushes the top 'V' forward, creating a braided chain that mimics the look of knitting on the surface of the fabric..

Where to Find It

This technique works best with Half Double Crochet (HDC) because the third loop is prominent and easy to find.

  • In the Round without turns: Look at the back of your fabric. Directly below the back loop, you will see a slanted horizontal bar. Insert your hook here.

  • In Rows: When you turn your work, the third loop faces you. It is located just below the front loop.

Why Use It?

  1. The "Knit" Look: It creates chain ridges that look like braided stockinette knitting.

  2. Density & Warmth: Because it pushes the loops forward, it creates a thicker, squishier fabric with less holes—perfect for cozy winter accessories.

  3. Texture: It adds instant visual depth to flat projects.

  4. Structure: It adds stability to edges and brims where you don't want the fabric to flop over.
