ONLINE PATTERN: Lots of texture and fun detailing in this ear warmer pattern.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

HOOK: 5mm crochet hook (or hook sizes that achieve gauge)

YARN: Approximately 80 (110) yards of worsted weight yarn

GAUGE: 18 stitches and 14 rows in 4" of single crochet in the back loop only.

EXTRAS:

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

SIZES: Adult sizes S/M & M/L

*For best fit choose a size approximately 2-3" smaller than head circumference.

S/M: 18.3" in circumference and 4 " in height

M/L: 20.6" in circumference and 4" in height.

PATTERN NOTES

  • if you want your project to turn out the correct size, always achieve gauge before beginning.

  • This pattern is adult sized, for head circumferences measuring 21-23 inches.

  • Slip stitch to join rounds.

  • If the number comes before the abbreviation, for example: 2hdc, this means stitch the given number into the same stitch. If the number is given afterward, for example: hdc2, this means to half double crochet the given number over subsequent stitches.

  • The right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) of the garment are indicated in the far left table column of the stitch instructions.

  • Double check your stitch counts at the end of each row or round.

  • Fasten off and weave in all ends when you are finished.

SPECIAL STITCHES/EXTRAS

Popcorn Stitch (pop)

The popcorn stitch will span over 2 stitches (so each popcorn stitch counts as two stitches). Yarn over and insert your hk into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up to working height 4x total. Yarn over and pull through all of the loops on the hook, then single crochet 1 in the next stitch to complete 1 popcorn stitch.

3rd Loops

There are half double crochet (hdc) stitches included throughout this pattern. Half double crochet stitches have a 3rd loop that is located just below the front loops (note that only 1 side of your work will have these 3rd loops, the other side will only show the front and back loops) . When instructed to stitch into the 3rd loop, only insert your hook into this loop (ignoring the front and back loops). This creates a braided look on the opposite side of the garment.

CINCH DETAILING

(RS) Thread a tapestry needle and keep the yarn doubled up on the needle throughout (approximately 56 inches of doubled up yarn). Insert the needle from the wrong side of your work to the right side just under Rnd 2 (the first round of braided looking stitches) Note: Leave the tail pieces long enough that you can weave them in later. Now insert the needle into the stitch directly above, where you fastened off in Rnd 10 and cinch the yarn up. Continue to wrap 10 times in this fashion, then tie off on the wrong side of your work and weave in the ends.

ree

Complete the same, 3 more times equally distanced apart on the ear warmer. You should have 4 cinch details total, equally spaced apart. Each one working under Rnd 2, and 1 stitch directly above from Rnd 10.

FINISHING
